Save the Last Dance
Would-be ballerina Sara (Julia Stiles) is forced to abandon her dancing plans when she leaves her smalltown home and moves to live with her estranged father in the dangerous South Side of Chicago. As a white girl in a predominantly black neighbourhood, Sara finds it a struggle to settle in, but when she meets black fellow-dancer Derek (Sean Patrick Thomas), she begins to feel much happier. The two set out together to realise their dreams, but as their relationship develops it brings forth major opposition from both their friends and their families, putting their future as a couple in jeopardy.
Saturday Night Fever
John Travolta stars in this 1970s drama about a young man who dreams of a better life. Tony (Travolta) is a Brooklyn roughneck stuck in a dead-end job as a salesman in a paint shop. He lives for Saturday night down at the disco where his stylish dancing has made him something of a local hero. But Tony wants more than his small world can offer. Through the influence of his more sophisticated dance partner Stephanie (Karen Gorney) and his brother, a disillusioned priest, Tony starts to question the possibilities for change. The soundtrack is provided by pop group The Bee Gees.
Flashdance
A young woman works as a welder by day, an erotic dancer by night, while pursuing her dream of dancing with the Pittsburgh Ballet.
Footloose
Ren McCormick (Kevin Bacon) is a city kid who moves to a Bible Belt town where dancing is banned by the local hell-fire preacher. Ren defiantly hoofs away in a series of spectacular sequences. The title song was nominated for an Oscar and the film also features the track ‘Let’s Hear It For the Boy’.
